Anchored on the theme, “Organikong Pagsasaka lalong Paunlarin...Lupa, Kapaligiran at Kalusugan ay Pagyamanin”, the 3rd Eastern Visayas Organic Agriculture Congress held last

July 4-5, 2017 at the Ormoc City Hall Multipurpose Building served as a venue to discuss, demonstrate and further develop initiatives in promoting organic farming through the Organic Agriculture Program (OAP) of the Department of Agriculture.

One of the highlights of the said congress was the distribution of agricultural interventions to Local Government Units and Farmer’s Associations. Nine (9) units grass cutter were awarded to the following associations: Samahan ng mga Magsasaka at Mangingisda ng Sulat in Sulat, Eastern Samar; Hugpa Forest Developer’s Association in Tomas Oppus, Southern

Leyte; Canfabi Small Farmers Association in Carigara, Leyte; Casulongan Farmers and Fisherfolks Association in Javier, Leyte; Campokpok Farmers Beneficiary Association in Tabangon, Leyte; Cabulisan Multipurpose Upland Farmers Association in Inopacan, Leyte; Northern Samar Association of Organic Vegetable Producers & Entrepreneurs in Catarman,

Northern Samar; Erenas Farmers and Fisherman Association in Northern Samar and San Isidro Farmers Association in Alangalang, Leyte.

The OAP also distributed two (2) units grass cutter to the Sta. Elena Vegetable Growers Association in Tanauan, Leyte and Allen Organic Vegetable Raisers Association in Allen, Northern Samar; one (1) unit hammer mill to the Mercedes Organic Farmers and Fishing Association in Mercedes, Eastern Samar; two (2) units vermi-tea brewer for Arteche, Eastern Samar and Gacao Organic Farmers Association in Palo, Leyte; one (1) unit vacuum pack sealer for Calubian Agri-Products Association in Calubian, Leyte and three (3) units brown rice mill to the Cagsumje Can-ipulan Solsogon Farmers Association in Sta. Margarita, Samar, SAMAKABA in Lope de Vega, Northern Samar ad ORSPERO Multipurpose Cooperative in Ormoc City.

Further, sixteen (16) units knapsack sprayers were also handed-over to various farmer’s associations engaged in organic farming. Ms Rebecca Crisostomo, a member of the Eastern Visayas Organic Farmers Producers Cooperative expressed her excitement for the knapsack

sprayer to their association. She deemed this timely since the group is establishing a garden/organic farm in Tacloban City.

All the interventions provided in the congress amounted to Php 731,000 funded under the current and continuing funds of the DA RFO-8’s Organic Agriculture Program.
